Madake is a type of Japanese bamboo. Traditional Shinais have been constructed out of this material for centuries. This bamboo's quality is identified by it's unique flexibility and unparalleled longevity of use. Conventional shinais tend to crack after certain period of use but these Madake shinais form tiny hair like bamboo fibers that protrude from the surface. These protruding fibers can be shaved off the shinai for continued use.
