Due to high customer demand, Aoi is pleased to offer the “Koban” Shinai (Oval shaped handle). This shinai is carefully crafted from sturdy “Keichiku” frosted bamboo and is proven to be as durable as our top selling Tadayoshi brand shinai’s. The handle is oval and has the traditional feel of a sword or bokuto, which aides in the proper kendo strike for beginners or novice Kendo-ka. Vertical as well as diagonal strikes (Do and Yoko Men) can be made with greater precision, which can shave off that millisecond and score that winning point!

Aoi’s Tokusen Senhime is a Shinai designed for the women kendo practitioner.
This Shinai is also made from the Keichiku frosted bamboo, but has been meticulously balanced and crafted with minimal regulation weight to give its user a noticeable advantage.
Although it is a Dobari style women do not have any difficulty wielding in practice or competition. All female Kendo practitioners should have at least one Tokusen Senhime in their bag.

As with our popular Tadayoshi Shinai, the Dobari Tadayoshi is designed for Kendoists with larger hands and like it balanced with the weight closer to the handle for a more balanced and controlled feel. Like the Tadayoshi, it is also made from the Keichiku Frosted Bamboo. The selection process however, is quite strict for the Dobari Tadayoshi to assure that the staves and nodes are perfectly matched to provide the user with feedback from the strike. This Shinai has been designed with balance and durability in mind.

The Hidetada Shinai is for those that prefer a thinner profile Shinai. The Hidetada Shinai is crafted form carefully selected top grade Keichiku frosted bamboo.

This Shinai is recommended for those that would like to increase impact for hits without sacrificing speed.

Our Yoshimune Shinai is our fastest Shinai. It is also crafted from the Keichiku species of bamboo that guarantees reliability. Although this Shinai was developed for intermediate to advanced Kendo practitioners, novice users have credited this Shinai for a noticeable speed increase in multiple hit combinations. The Iemitsu Shinai is a solid choice for those that want to make the step up to Madake Shinai’s. Madake is a species of bamboo that is grown in a region with large temperature variations which makes the fibers more dense and flexible than compared to the Keichiku bamboo. The Madake Shinai is the best Shinai that is available for Kendo. In terms of the profile of the Iemitsu, it is slender throughout the Shinai, yet has meatier staves to eliminate distortion enabling a quick and powerful strike. The Iemitsu Shinai in its performance for MEN or head strikes.

Our Ieyasu Shinai is a koto style Shinai, but has a medium thickness throughout. It is perfectly crafted using the highest grade of Green Madake bamboo. This green bamboo is picked when it is younger than the regular 4 year old Madake and has a higher natural oil content than that of the regular Madake bamboo. This higher moisture retention, paired with the flexible dense fiber properties of Madake produces a durable and longer lifespan Shinai. Its potential can truly be unleashed by experienced Kendo pratitioners that favour powerful and explosive one strike hits from a distance.

The Tesshin Aoi is a Shinai that was originally developed and manufactured in Niigata, Japan. This Shinai definitely has presence in both feel and appearance. Contrary to the translated name of the Shinai (Steel Heart), this Shinai is extremely well balanced and easy to control. Being hit on the other hand, is a different story. A crosscut of the Shinai reveals a relatively square look that keeps its form through impact. This hard hitting Shinai is undoubtedly the most powerful Shinai that Aoi has to offer. This Shinai is recommended for instructors or highly advanced Kendo-ka.
